Odd Future/ Major Lazer/Girl Talk
These three groups/folks played at Voodoo fest this weekend, which was awesome! In addition to some other really fun stuff. I think my fav was seriously Blink 182. Man, they were so good. To see Travis Barker live is amazing. He is a really amazing drummer that makes the band. The lyrics are cute, the guitar is simple, but the drums just knock it out to me. He's def one of my top three drummers.
Odd Future was alright live. You know how they have chill beats and harsh lyrics as is? Well live it really doesn't mesh well because they're more into yelling and being fierce than when recorded and it just comes off as abrasive to me. It's certainly worth seeing and they're pretty funny, but I just wasn't glued to the stage like I thought I'd be.
Major Lazer was pretty freaking amazing. They are crazy, and Diplo has the golden touch to me. I got bored with everyone crashing the stage, esp when it was to the point that they had to shut it down 'til the stage was cleared. It's just a lot of ridiculous humping that many of the underage girls were too happy to do. Call me old fashioned I guess but it just made me yawn.
Girl Talk... I only heard a couple of songs because I was on my way to Blink 182, but eh, he's just the same stuff different day. I had an hours long discussion about mash up djs and the different styles they take on with a friend last night. I respect what the guy does, but it's just same stuff different day.
Now what WAS awesome was that Dj Swamp, DJ Z-trip, A-trak, Mannie Fresh, and a couple others were all using vinyl. And scratching. Like old school turntablist making songs with scratches good times. I was really happy to see this and I'd love to see a resurgence of this. It's something that's more visually impressive to me as well as a good show for a dj. If a dj is just dancing around hitting buttons I'm more into dancing and less into watching. But if they're crab walking with their fingers between two turntables I'm freaking impressed. Plus DJ Swamp sets his vinyl on fire.
