Neighborhood Nostalgia
I’m from Chicago, I lived there for 28ish years. I grew up in the city in a house my parents still live in (my 26 year old brother, too – but that’s another story). I lived in Portage Park. I don’t even know what the name of my current neighborhood in Austin is called. I’ve lived in three different neighborhoods since I’ve been here: Oltorf east of I35, SoCo and currently Airport & Springdale. The first one felt like the burbs, nothing to walk to except a Whataburger. Soco felt like we just missed something special, like we arrived to a party where all of the interesting people are already onto the next gig. The East Side has live stock, vegetable gardens as big as micro-farms (and there’s an actual farm near here, too) and a more diverse population than the other neighborhoods I’ve experienced here. But it still doesn’t feel like a community, a small city within a city like my old neighborhood. Maybe that’s because Austin still kinda feels like a small town to me.

My husband & I would love to spend some time in Houston. You actually have museums. I've always heard that Houston is a lot like Chicago. Other people from Texas (not Austinites) have said they hate Houston. Which makes me think I would like it.

I love Austin but live in Houston; I go there often and think you are a lucky lady.
