Shame on Rice University for Trying to Secretly Sell KTRU 91.7FM

If you like FFF-type music and live in Houston, you know about KTRU 91.7 FM. KTRU is THE ONLY PLACE on the radio dial where you can hear all the great bands of past and present. Earlier this week, it what revealed the the Rice University adminisrration has been secretly negotiating an agreement to sell the transmitting tower and FCC license to the University of Houston (UH) for $9.5 Million. UH already has a radio station called KUHF 88.7 FM. With the purchase, UH hopes to create a classical music station. I Say oh hell NO. No way!

Why save KTRU? Rice students created KTRU from scratch, built it up over 40 years, and now Rice is selling it out from underneath them. The sale was set up in secret specifically to exclude input from Rice students and alumni. It will kill one of the last sources of local, independent music and information left on Houston airwaves.
If you are in Houston, care about good music, believe in the mission of KTRU, please speak out now.

How can I help?

Sign our petition. We’re still considering our protest options. Keep informed of news and events by joining the Save KTRU Facebook group and following savektru on Twitter.

Contact the administration and let them know how you feel. If you write a letter, consider sharing it with us so we can post it here. If you’re a Rice alum, your voice carries special weight. Some alumni have decided to stop donating to Rice.

Contact KUHF membership services and let them know about the state of your donations to their station if U of H follows through with the sale.

For more information about all of the above, please go to www.savektru.org and www.ktru.org.

Good Music Lovers of the world unite; you have much to lose in Houston if Rice University succeeds in selling KTRU 91.7 FM.
