Bind, Torture, Kollege.
I’m not an avid blogger, but I decided now would be a good time to hopefully figure out just what I am doing. The end of my junior year in high school is slowly approaching, first off! Couldn’t be more ecstatic about it, either. In all honesty, it feels like THIS year has been my senior year, what with all my college planning. Incase you were wondering, I’m hoping to apply to UT-Austin to major in either psychology or computer science. I’ll be just that much closer to you FFF maniacs, I reckon, which is something to look forward to. Luckily, because of my rank in class, my admittance is guaranteed. All I need to worry about is finding a decently priced place to reside in (or at least a decent park or alley in which to squat for a few years without much authoritative trouble—maybe Waterloo? :P). College is one expensive place to even dream about without nightmares of student loans and evil professors. If anything goes sour in the planning process, I hope to fall back on going to ACC. I feel a desperate desire to live in Austin, is all. In the case that you haven’t heard, Harlingen, TX is a pretty hum-drum city. At least in the “fun” aspect of living, you know? All this college stuff aside, I’m hoping to get a job this summer—one I can balance between a few college courses. I’m thinking Starbuck’s barista (it’s one of the few job offers available for a 17 year-old here) or a sales representative/cashier at Game Stop. We’ll see, I suppose. If I save up for anything, it’s either a drum set or college. I haven’t figured out which is more annoying not to have enough money for. For now, I guess I’m just doing as best as I can in school without slacking off in my gaming. :P
What kinds of jobs did you guys start off with? If you guys live in Austin, how do you get by? I’m interested in these types of things! Anyway, have a good one for now. :)

Yeah, to the point about jobby-jobs while in school, I had a TON during my protracted 6-year college stint for a 4-year degree:
* working at HEB grocery store (bookkeeper)
* waiter at restaurant
* cook at restaurant
* vacuum cleaner salesman
* Best Buy
* pet clinic (filing and reception stuff)
* motorcycle courier
* more I'm forgetting
* pager/cell phone retail
Point being that, at least when I was in school, there were a lot of jobs with flexible hours around.
Cya @ the next FFF!!! :)

This is all really helpful. I know it's important (particularly now) for me to focus on the "now", but I can't help but think about life outside of and after this place. The drum set shall be purchased before too soon, if that is your recommendation, Stephen K. :) I'm really looking forward to the networking aspect of moving up there--obviously. I've never given much thought to which religion I'd choose if I was so given the
ultimatum. I assume most religions are as dirty and penny-pinching, if I may make that assumption. Either way, that is my own opinion (I don't need permission to have and voice it).
As for being another number at UT, it's the least of my worries. I'm a fairly decent student, I reckon. I'm not looking for any breaks related to college beyond an easily landed apartment. I went up a few weeks ago, too, to UT's open house. I love the campus! Aesthetically, the only intimidations I came across were the beautiful people. :O Never seen so many in my life. Haha! I didn't check out the CS program but I did fall in love with the film department. Went to a lecture in which people analyzed scenes from Alfred Hitchcock films. Way cool! FFF 2011, on another note, will surely be graced by my odd presence.
I appreciate the advice, all. :)

I worked all sorts of jobs in high school. I worked food, retail, and as a clerk for a chiropractor. honestly you take what you can and just work up from there. I started going to a community college in San Antonio, got a job as a work study and now I'm a full time computer support technician at the same college (been there almost 7 years now). funny part about that is my degree was for drama/speech. I kept trying to move to Austin but every time I got close, something ended up falling through (housing, job, etc.) and I'd get a promotion at the college. go figure.
just find something you enjoy doing (and you really can enjoy doing just about anything) and go from there. also, get the drum set. not that college isn't important but if you do get good grades, try for scholarships (student loans can really suck if you can't find a job when you finish).
as for getting by in ATX, all my friends say networking is your best tool. meet people, try new things, and good things are likely to follow. just stay away from that Church of Scientology. a religion based on the writings of a science fiction author who was quoted as saying, "Writing for a penny a word is ridiculous. If a man really wanted to make a million dollars, the best way to do it would be start his own religion." really? come on now. if anyone deserves a religion it's Philip K. Dick. hell, I'd be a Dick. you know what? I'm starting that church.
wow that turned into a rant quickly...

What? The Valley isn't super crazy fun?!?!?! :P I have family down there, so I totally know where you're coming from. You'll love Austin. I got my CS degree (BSCS) from UT, and one nice thing about Austin is there is opportunity here to get paid internships in the tech industry. Don't expect to be treated like anything but a number at UT, tho (which is a fine lesson, like "welcome to the real world"). Many students get apartments off East Riverside, which is cheaper than other parts of town. Definitely come up some weekend and tour the campus, the CS program (and science and engineering classes) are really good, and then you can check out some of the housing options and stuff.
Oh, and come up for the FFF 2011, too!!! :)

I would just try to plan your schedule accordingly so you can get a good job. I worked at a bank and got paid good money. Try getting a paid internship related to your major.
