Slayer again
Rambling of a Rabid slayer fan.....
How far will you go for Slayer? Shit I just drove 220 miles (one way) from San Antonio to the Woodlands Texas Pavilion in Houston area. That is a long ass road trip, but Slayer is worth it. It seem like I am in that situation a lot lately. The Verizon Wireless Amphitheater closed down in the San Antonio area (Selma, TX), so a lot of festivals are skipping San Antonio……FUCK! Now San Antonio Metal Heads have to drive far to see Festival concerts. The last time I saw Slayer, I had to drive to Austin for the Fun-Fun-Fun Fest in November 2011 which was around 140 miles round trip.
I guess I can’t complain too much. I won this ticket by taking a survey on Mayhem Fest website, so I got a free ticket and VIP access. The VIP access was supposed to be “no escort needed” all access to production and backstage areas, but I think the ticket office messed up. I got a regular VIP access that required escort. I just decided to not even try going backstage. Other people with VIP passes said it was almost impossible to get backstage. You had to request exact issuer of VIP pass and have them “escort” you backstage. Too much hassle! I was perfectly happy just watching the bands on stage. I did not feel like jumping though hoops of fire just to meet some bands.
To be honest, the only reason I went to this concert was to see Slayer. I literally have seen Slayer 4 decades: The 80’s, 90’s, 00’s, and 10’s. Every time Slayer gets to central Texas I go, even if it means missing work. Slayer is more important than any job! Just call me a rabid Slayer fan. If Slayer did not play this fest, I would not have gone. Don’t get me wrong, the other “major” bands Anthrax, Motorhead, and Slipknot are great. It is just SLAYER is my favorite band.
The weirdest thing for me is that this is the first time I saw Slayer in a reserved seat. I have always seen Slayer in the pit or general admission floor. I am use to fighting and clawing my way to the front rail. This time I was more relaxed. It was nice not getting bruised, bloodied and sweaty while watching Slayer. It was a different feel for me to watch Slayer in a relaxed state. I liked it, and now that I am 40 years old, I might consider buying reserved seating in the future.

I drove from San Marcos to Austin, then San Marcos to Dallas, then to Marfa for ATDI it was totally fucking worth it, we rented a HUGE SUV for the trip and just got with it. It wasn't so bad with only a couple people and a large vehicle it was actually a lot of fun, but SOLO would have SUCKED!

I feel you @Inky. I am so use to doing a 5 hour drive that a 3 feels like nothing.

Great review! I remember seeing Slayer on the God Hates the World tour in 2001 and the show was at a respectable little seated theater that usually plays host to stand-up comedians, R&B singers and pop stars. Watching people crowd-surf and mosh in-between and on the seats was certainly a sight to behold. Faith No More also played there on their last official tour (with Limp Bizkit, no less) and it was just as surreal. There are some bands that just seem odd in a seated venue. And I must also second the love for "Undisputed Attitude."

I have been to metal pits and showed up to work after having my sternum to pelvis split from cancer surgery, metal pits aren't scary. Especially when you have a high threshold for pain and have been thru jump and SERE school.

i bet that WAS a bit wierd to sit in a seat, i saw em at the verizon a WHILE back and i had to stand and sneak down to the pit.. which in hindsight wasn't smart.. very bloodied and beat stupid.. metal pits aren't and should not be mistaken for Punk Pits

Yeah at some point you realize its just not fun to be in the pit as you age haha. But awesome set list I have seen then I think like 5-6 times total and they have always been killer. My favorite album is Undisputed Attitude namely because I'm a punk at heart.
